Cannot Log In to Facebook or Instagram: Find the Cause

Published October 17, 20267 min readFacebookInstagramAccess

“Cannot log in to Facebook” can refer to several different problems. The screen normally tells you whether the issue is a password, a code that has not arrived, changed contact details, a suspension, or a profile Facebook cannot find. Avoid random forms and never give a password, two-factor code, or backup code to anyone. We never ask for them either.

Cannot log in to Facebook: read the screen first

First, write down the exact message and take a screenshot. That wording determines the next step.

  1. Wrong password or no code received. You see “Forgot password?”, a code request, or a message that the password is incorrect, while your former email address or phone number still appears. Use the recovery option on that screen and follow the code steps below. Rather than cycling through dozens of old passwords, use the takeover route if you later spot an unfamiliar sign-in or changed details.
  2. Someone changed the email address or phone number. You see unfamiliar details, received a change notice, or people you know say the profile is sending unusual messages. Secure your email first, then type facebook.com/hacked into the browser yourself. Our guide to a Facebook profile takeover covers the first actions; for Instagram, see lost Instagram access.
  3. “Account suspended” or “disabled”. The screen concerns a platform decision. Read the stated reason and deadline, save the notice, and use the review route named there. Avoid creating a replacement profile to evade the decision. See what a disabled Facebook profile means and our restriction types.
  4. “Account not found” or no profile appears. Check the spelling and whether the username may have changed. Look for the public profile from a friend's device without using their sign-in. If it disappeared after suspicious notices, use the official takeover route. For a notice about a final status, read the overview of a suspended or deleted account.

The same distinction applies when you cannot log in to Instagram. Check whether the app shows a password problem, security check, unfamiliar email address or platform restriction; for the last case, our guide to a restricted Instagram profile can help you interpret the screen. A failed sign-in alone does not show a takeover.

When Facebook does not send a code

A missing Facebook code often means a delivery delay or that the code is going to another contact method previously added to the profile.

  1. Check Spam, Promotions, and every mailbox you may have added to the profile. Search for Facebook, but open only messages whose sender and address are consistent with genuine notices.
  2. For SMS, wait a few minutes, check signal coverage, and confirm that the number can receive messages. When you do not recognise the contact methods on screen, avoid switching immediately between several numbers.
  3. Choose “Try another way”, or its equivalent, only when the listed email, phone, or recognised device is actually yours. Try from a browser and device you have previously used for the profile.
  4. Avoid a run of code requests. Earlier codes may become invalid, and frequent requests can pause new ones. Do not use third-party code generators, apps, or people who say they can receive a code for you.

When the code goes to an unfamiliar email address or phone number, follow the official protected-profile route. Also check for a fake sign-in screen: fake verification links often collect a password and a code at the same time.

Find the profile by name or username

When you need to locate a Facebook profile, use only information you already know. Ask a friend to open your public profile page and copy its address, or search for the exact name alongside city, photo and mutual friends. The address may show the username; note it for the official sign-in screen. Do not ask the friend to make mass reports or use a false identity.

If the search shows another profile with the same name, do not select it by guesswork. Compare an older photo, mutual connections and earlier posts. When a profile was renamed or hidden after an unauthorised change, old Facebook notices are a better trail than search. For information on reaching official channels, see contacting Instagram, Facebook and TikTok support.

Identity documents: when they are appropriate

Facebook may request an identity document only after its official flow displays that request. The document is for that specific process. Never send one in advance by email, chat, or to a profile calling itself Meta Support.

When the screen explicitly asks for a document, check the page address, follow the image instructions exactly, and save a screenshot of the request. Do not alter or falsify the document. Where the profile name differs from the document, provide only what the official flow asks for. You can also prepare old sign-in notices, an approximate creation date, and the devices you normally used, without sharing sensitive codes.

Facebook no longer offers trusted contacts as a recovery route. Friends cannot unlock the profile through that former feature. Do not pay anyone claiming otherwise.

After the appropriate request

Submit one consistent request, follow the screens, and retain the date, exact notice wording, and screenshots. Keep your email address, phone number, and document image out of comments. If you regain access, change the password, review contact details, active sessions, and access to linked pages.

For a profile with business value, advertising access, or an official route that ended without a clear decision, a diagnostic review can organise the facts and evidence. It does not replace Meta's review.

Frequently asked questions

Why cannot I log in to Facebook when the password is correct?

Facebook may require an additional check for a new device, be waiting for a code, or have contact details that were already changed. Read the message exactly and confirm that the displayed email address or phone number is yours instead of repeating the password attempt.

How long should I wait when Facebook does not send a code?

Wait several minutes and check Spam and the SMS service before requesting another code. A sequence of requests can invalidate earlier codes or temporarily limit delivery, so then choose only an official alternative you recognise.

Can I get a Facebook profile back by name?

A name and username can help locate the correct profile in the official sign-in screen, particularly from a familiar device. They do not establish ownership on their own, so complete any additional check Facebook requests.

Should I send an identity document to someone offering help?

No. Upload a document only when Facebook's official screen explicitly requests it, never in a chat, comment, or outside form. A legitimate identity check does not require a password, two-factor code, or backup code.
